I was invited by the British Council and the Swedish Embassy to host a workshop at TUMO center for for Creative Technologies in Yerevan, Armenia. During three days the young students made personal documentaries. The workshop was a side event during The European Film Festival.

Johanna Bernhardson, a Swedish filmmaker specialising in short documentaries and essay-films, will conduct a three-day training session for learners at TUMO as a tool for creative networking aimed at the improvement of their documentary storytelling skills. The participants will make short films expressing their own ideas on universal topics. The method is artistic in a way that manifests Johanna’s approach to transcend the personal and reach beyond the separation between a subject and an object.

Kontaktresa i Tunis med Svenska Institutet

Den 6-9 november var jag på kontaktresa med Svenska Institutet för att lära mig om Tunisien och MeNa-regionen och för att knyta kontakter med eventuella samarbetspartner för framtida kulturprojekt. Tanken är att gör något liknande i Tunis som jag och Karin Ekberg redan gör i Kaukasus. En mycket lärorik och inspirerande resa i en spirande demokrati.

To Reach the Universal through the Personal – workshop i Moldavien

I veckan som gick var jag på Moldox Filmfestival i Cahul i Moldavien. Jag höll en 5-dagars workshop för kvinnliga filmare från Rumänien och Modavien. Festivalen visade även min kortfilmTaxi Tbilisi.

To reach the universal through the personal. Advanced workshop for female directors with a project. Stories by women are often said to be too personal or not universal enough. Johanna says the opposite. By emphasizing the personal in your storytelling you create films to which most people can relate. By including your own voice as a filmmaker, whether directly or indirectly, your unique perspective gives the viewer a stronger contact with the subject. This way a personal story can become universal and reach a larger audience. The personal is not the opposite of the political.

This workshop includes feedback on and development of your own documentary project, practical exercises to find your personal voice (using own equipment), watching and discussing films and network building.

The importance of increasing the number of women storytellers and female main characters can’t be underestimated. By excluding the female side of the (hi)story you just address half of the population and you leave the other half unheard.

Jag och min kollega Karin Ekberg var i Tbilisi igen under dokumentärfilmsfestivalen CinéDoc och höll vår workshop för kvinnliga dokumentärfilmare från Georgien, Armenien och Azerbadjan. Workshopen är finansierad av Svenska Institutet Creative Force och detta var andra omgången.
